Charter Steel, a division of Charter Manufacturing, is a leading American supplier of carbon and alloy steel bar, rod and wire products. Faced with a need to upgrade their material delivery system from their scrap bins to the electric arc furnace (EAF), they engaged Boldt to deliver a new raw material handling building and systems. Additionally, a new scrubbing system and automated, top-feeding chemical system were added for regulatory emissions compliance.

More than 350’x22’ of shaking and traditional conveyors were installed to move the raw materials from the collection location to the EAF. The new system also included the capturing of wasted exhaust gases and water-cooled ductwork. A top-feed system was installed and included two conveyor systems that will carry lime and carbon from a new underground hopper on the outside of the building, to the top of the EAF where it will be dropped in during the melting process.

Project Highlights

  • Boldt completed the entire project, totaling more than 84,000 hours of self-performed work, including five major outages, without any incidents, injuries or lost time accidents.
  • Nine full “down days” were removed from the schedule by working with the engineer and owner on installation solutions that were faster than the original design.
  • 550 tons of steel were erected and 875 tons of equipment set and aligned with no start-up issues.
