Bergstrom Automotive – Smart Car Dealership

Bergstrom Automotive - Smart Car Dealership Exterior with 3 Smart Cars Parked Outside

Boldt has completed numerous projects for Appleton-based Bergstrom Automotive, including construction of the first stand-alone smart car dealership in the United States, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This innovative 7,318 SF dealership includes a show room, reception and waiting area, boutique for merchandise, drive-through service and write-up area, wash/detail room, employee locker room and five-story tower with vehicle lift to display vehicles.

Using Lean construction methods for planning and executing construction, the dealership was completed in only 18 weeks. The project also features a number of sustainable features, including receiving 50% of their energy from sustainable sources, use of efficient lighting and plumbing systems, low-emitting materials, 99.4% of recycled construction waste, locally sourced materials and even 50% of the landscaping devoted to native and adaptable plants. Because of these features, the project received LEED–Silver accreditation.

Project Highlights

  • The low-capacity soils on the site required significant over-excavation and backfill with flowable concrete.
  • After the structural steel was on site, the city ruled that the display tower fell under the regulations for signage, instead of a building, and the team had to modify the materials on-site to decrease the height by 5 feet.
