Wolverine Power Cooperative – Alpine Power Plant

Woverine Power Cooperative - Alpine Power Plant Construction Site View from Above

The Wolverine Alpine Power Plant is home to two simple cycle General Electric (GE) 7FA.05 frame combustion turbines that generate a combined 406 MW. The project was constructed at a greenfield site located just outside the Township of Elmira, Michigan, in Otsego County. The two combustion turbines are natural gas fired only, with the accompanying generators being hydrogen cooled.

Boldt served as the general contractor, as well as installer for concrete equipment foundations, vendor equipment, structural steel and equipment enclosures. Boldt also self-performed the balance of plant piping and below grade, above grade and vendor-supplied piping installations. Due to the plant’s location and weight of equipment, the turbines, generators and Hyundai GSU Transformers were delivered by rail. To move the equipment to site, Boldt coordinated a heavy haul subcontract. Using a Goldhofer for transportation and construction of a gantry system or a jack-and-slide process, the equipment was set on its respective foundations.

Project Highlights

  • The new natural gas-fired plant is part of a major shift in Michigan toward more sustainable, environmentally friendly power, coupled with the closure of 15 coal-fired plants.
  • Due to the plant’s remote location and weight of equipment, the turbines, generators and Hyundai GSU Transformers were delivered by rail.
  • The plant provides electricity to nearly 120,000 area homes.
